Formed in 1954 by George Gamow, the RNA Tie Club brought together the brightest and soon-to-be most influential scientists of the day including co-discoverers of DNA, Dr. James D. Watson and Francis H. C. Crick.

During these early days of molecular biology, the club members engaged in informal discussion of untested theories to decode the mystery of RNA. It was here – as Gamov had envisioned – where the members could collaborate in a forum of ideas and new discoveries could be made.

Each club member was nick-named based on the abbreviations of the 20 amino acids. But it was the RNA Tie – a black knit tie embroidered with the green and yellow RNA helix – that was the trademark of the club.
