Athena Savalas represents the fourth generation of artists in her family. Her great grandfather was an iconographer, her grandmother, a famous painter (and the mother of actor Telly Savalas), and her uncle, a well-known religious painter of Greek Orthodox Churches throughout the United States.
To view her drawings is to view her illustrious legacy; in her work, the traditional, painstaking devotion of her forebears shines through. She began drawing as a young child, and, inspired by visits to her grandmother’s art studio, developed an early fascination with paints, pencils, and colors. As a teenager, Athena began to paint in oils and do pen-and-ink drawings, showing a penchant for abstract and surreal styles. Her work transports the viewer into a world that is simultaneously real and surreal. Her intricate understanding of line and form allows her to delineate not only the surface of a leaf, for instance, but also the cellular complexity within it.
Ms. Savalas’ work has been exhibited throughout the New York metropolitan area, as well as in Florida, California, and Greece, and she has received numerous awards. She grew up in Huntington, New York, and, in 1996, moved to Bronxville, where she lives with her husband and daughter. She received her fine arts degree at Hofstra University, on Long Island, New York, and continues to take classes at the New York School of Visual Arts.
