Cathy Cyphers Soref became involved with Cold
Spring Harbor Laboratory as a Cold Spring Harbor
Laboratory Association Director seven years
ago because of her fascination with science
and the important contributions scientists make
to the world. The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory
Association is a group of Lab supporters whose
mission it is to create awareness of the valuable
research and educational programs at Cold Spring
Harbor Laboratory. Currently, Cathy is serving
as secretary of the Association.
As a member of the Association, Cathy was haunted
by a conversation she had with Tim Tully, a
professor at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory who
studies Drosophila (fruit flies) to learn more
about neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's.
He told her quite simply, "I am one of the best
in the world at what I do and I am able to spend
less and less time doing it." His, like many
other's, lab time is restricted by the need
to search and apply for funding to support the
research. Cathy initially thought to sell framed
x-ray crystallography images of proteins taken
by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Professor,
Leemor Joshua-Tor, in her quest to cure cervical
cancer. She had already done a test-mailing
to 50 science museum gift shops across the country
in the hope of raising money for Joshus-Tor's
research, when she realized she could use Paul
Newman's philanthropic template to raise money
for all of the researchers at Cold Spring Harbor
Laboratory, including Tully. With the lyric,
"It's not in the Levi's . . . It's in the genes,"
written by her husband, Douglas, in mind, DNA
STUFF was born.
